The week commencing 10th June brought a wonderful display of drama and dance, the culmination of many weeks of hard work, practise and creativity from our talented students.
Co-written and performed by Year 9 student, Sam, Tuesday 11th June saw the brilliant production of ‘Extra Time’, which explored themes of growing up, coping with pressure and parental influence – all through the course of a football season.
Our Head of Drama, Peter Scoggins, commented, “Sam has worked incredibly hard over the last term or so to craft, rehearse and polish this piece of theatre. For a Year 9 pupil to have done this largely by himself with such confidence, enthusiasm and ability is no mean feat!”
Years 7 to 9 boys took part in a dance masterclass on 11th June. The FuzzyLogic programme inspires male youth dance, fusing high tempo dance with the boys’ own incredible enthusiasm and energy. The programme is part of Leighton Park’s commitment to supporting students to try new things, push barriers and realise their talents.
On Wednesday 12th June, Year 10 GCSE Drama students presented a wonderfully thought-provoking ‘workshop’ production of Federico Garcia Lorca’s passionate, magical realism play Blood Wedding. Students experimented with choral speaking to make a feature of other-worldly elements and explored the techniques of Bertolt Brecht, with roles shared between actors in a gender-blind cast. The conviction of performances was captivating.
Thursday 13th June saw Years 7 to 10 students put on our inaugural ‘Let’s Dance!’ showcase, demonstrating an impressive range of technique and styles. Intricate group choreography was matched by wonderful individual performances. Leighton Park opened its new dance studio and launched its GCSE Dance programme in 2018 and it is remarkable to see what Leader of Dance, Beth Butler, has achieved in such a short period of time, including with students who were completely new to dance.
