A colourful crossing in rainbow stripes was unveiled by the SAGE group in celebration of Pride month 2023 on Tuesday 6th June at the pedestrian crossing by the School’s restaurant, Oakview.
Speaking at the unveiling, Jordan Kraus-Harvey, SAGE co-ordinator, reflected: “It’s my pleasure that we are gathered here today as part of LGBTQ+ Pride month to unveil our new signs which are hopefully going to carry on long into the future. Sadly, these are turbulent times, so it’s important for us to remember why we gather here in this country and across the globe each year to celebrate Pride.
It’s a reminder to be loud, to be visible and to be unashamedly who we are, no matter the opposition, so that we may pave the way forward for future generations to grow into the opportunities that we might not have.
Quaker testimonies include messages of respect equality, tolerance and love, messages that alight perfectly with Pride and with the LGBTQ+ community. A collection of people who want to live with kindness, kindness for all, no matter your colour, creed, sexuality, gender, or lack of.
These signs are a permanent reminder of our commitment to these goals, to hold high the values of tolerance and respect. By placing these signs here at one of the busiest entrances we mark this place as a safe space for students, staff and parents. Leighton Park is a place you can belong and that’s something that I hope that we can continue long into the future.”
Natalia (Lower Sixth) added, “I think that Pride month is important because it’s a chance to really celebrate and accept who we are Obviously we have to be proud of who we are all year round, but it’s nice to have a chance to focus in and have a look at everyone around us and appreciate them.”
