A Masterclass in Planning a Masterclass!

Our Lower Sixth mathematicians combined their academic ambitions with their Quaker values today as they sought to learn the skills necessary to help others with maths.

29 students from Year 12 have opted into a new venture for Leighton Park whereby they will be running six Maths masterclasses for our partner primary schools later in the academic year.  Each masterclass will be developed and led by a different group of our Lower Sixth students. The aim is to support KS2 pupils to make progress with their numeracy whilst instilling a lifelong love of maths. Today’s training, led by Alison Eves, Primary Maths Coordinator focussed our students on the practicalities of planning a masterclass and developing their own.

Earlier in the term, Ben and Rachel from the Royal Institute came into School to deliver a masterclass to our Year 7 students with our Lower Sixth mathematicians observing the activities, absorbing what a professional masterclass looks like.

Our Partnerships and Outreach programme, led by Natasha Coccia, engages Lower Sixth Leighton Park students with opportunities to volunteer including support with literacy, with numeracy and with sports skills such as swimming. The volunteering can be counted towards the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and also contributes to our Oakleaf Diploma Award, a new initiative for 2023 which prepares our students for adult life beyond school.
