A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Shakespeare’s light and magical play of romantic entanglements, fairy folly, misguided humans and the chaos caused by mistaking appearance for reality was brought to life by the talented thespians in Years 7 and 8 on Tuesday 29th June.

The Fryer Drama Group were poised to deliver their performance after months of rehearsals in and out of lockdown and a particularly intense focus on preparations in the second half of the summer term. The costumes were glorious, particularly those for Titania, Oberon and Puck, which brought the woodland setting into their garments reflecting their affinity to the natural world. The lovers, Helena, Hermia, Lysander and Dimitrius, were elegant in their smart 20s garb and the mechanicals were suitably contrasting in a medley of utilitarian garments.

“It’s a really good play and it’s been a lot of fun!” reflected Leo, who plays Dimitrius. Findlay, who has a variety of parts including Robin Starvling, agreed, “I’ve really liked it. It’s been exciting to figure out what we’re doing and I actually liked doing all the rehearsals; just being on stage doing my thing and seeing what everyone else does.” Fellow actor, Youssef who plays Lysander has enjoyed the Fryer Drama experience, commenting, “I’m going to do it again in Year 8 hopefully. It’s going to be interesting to do the final performance, I can’t wait!” Maja, on stage as Helena, echoed his anticipation, “I’m excited but a little nervous, I’m going to miss it. The whole Fryer Drama thing has been fun!”. Cali (Queen Titania) summed up the feelings of the company when she said, “It’s sad it’s coming to an end because we’ve been working on it for such a long time but I’m very excited because this is what all our work’s gone towards.”

The delivery of the lines was excellent with the cast working well together to perform a play which engaged and entertained the audience. The lucky Year 10 GCSE Drama students bore witness to the dress rehearsal on the Monday followed by the entirety of Fryer House in the Main Hall on Tuesday lunchtime in support of their fellow students. The show was also filmed for parents and other students unable to attend in person due to Covid-19 restrictions.
