A Stellar Production: Return to the Forbidden Planet

The 2023 whole school production was an absolute treat to behold as months of effort and bundles of enthusiasm burst forth on the Main Hall stage with a powerful energy that delighted the rapt audiences over the four-night run. From 7th to 10th February the cast, band and crew delivered a superb rock ‘n’ roll musical that combined science, space travel, a huge green monster, a myriad of relationship complications and an audience participation manoeuvre embracing reverse polarity!

With the cast and band on stage the whole time there was plenty to watch alongside the absorbing main action. The actors all maintained their characters, and their American accents, flawlessly and delivered some wonderful songs, dances and memorable lines, many borrowed from Shakespeare’s original, others (like ‘to beep or not to beep’) in a new guise!

We are sure the bard would have been pleased to watch this gem of entertainment as many of our audience testified it was a great night out.

Scriptwriter, Paul Webb, described it as a “delightful, heart-warming evening.” Whilst LP parent Rosie commented “The show is a great success and all the children seemed to be thoroughly enjoying it and throwing themselves into it. Congratulations on a fantastic show!”. Fellow parent, Roberta, added, “The show tonight was amazing; you have done such a fantastic job with the students and must be so proud – they rose to the occasion and certainly lived up to the saying ‘the show must go on’.” “Awesome performances – I loved the way the students gave it their all. I thought the band were absolutely amazing – so professional. It was easy to forget that they were students rather than a pros. A great opportunity for them to experience performing over a four night run.” noted Liz. “LP’s version definitely captured the zany goofy fun of it, as well as the professionalism.”

The actors were having just as much fun as the audience it seems with Alex (Lower Sixth) who plays the Bosun reflecting, “The production has seriously changed my whole perspective on performing as a whole. It is so, so, so fun! My favourite part is probably a split between the sheer joy I feel at the community spirit after each successful production, and the sheer joy I feel at entertaining people! The best thing is the support for each member and the level of teamwork present in this production. ”

Charlotte (Year 11) enthused, “What I am enjoying most about my role of Gloria is being thought of as the villain for part of show as I never normally play those types of characters, so it is more interesting and exciting to play. As well as singing some brilliant songs which are really testing my vocal range. The best part about the production is how smoothly the songs come in and out of the story making the show flow nicely which is helped from our incredible band and singers. The different songs help keep the story alive and create excitement and fun!”

Sam, who played love interest and space pilot, Captain Tempest, agreed, “I love how I’m playing a cheesy B-Movie hero character who thinks he is the greatest and is very self-righteous. I get to push it to its extreme and make fun of this old stereotype from golden age Hollywood films and doing that is so much fun! I think the best thing about the production is the sense of community we have as a whole. We are all working on the spaceship as one and this really shows. I’ve had such a great time with the rest of the cast, making memories I’ll never forget.”
