A Taste of the Industrial Revolution

Year 5 visitors from Eton End School enjoyed learning about food during the industrial revolution on Monday 16th October as they joined our History and Food Tech teams for two workshops.

19 Year 5 students discovered what the world map looked like in the late 1700s and how difficult it was to transport goods around the British Empire. The groups discussed the dangers of the trade routes for luxuries like cinnamon and pupils were surprised to see how far groceries and other items that are taken for granted today had to travel. Their History class involved games with anagrams for the ingredients and designing an advert for their delicious finished product that they created in Food Tech; apple crumble!

Discussing sustainability and collecting apples from beneath the trees on the Park gave pupils an insight into the environmental benefits of keeping food supplies local and into sustainability as one of our core Quaker values. The fun in Food Tech of peeling apples and making crumble topping involved a number of the ingredients such as sugar and cinnamon covered in the History class. The students greatly enjoyed the experience. Georgina commented, “My favourite part was trying to work out where the ingredients came from.” Whereas for Sienna the advert design was the top task; “I really like it and I learnt a lot.” she enthused. Jacob enjoyed cutting up the apple the most with classmate Raag considering it “the best cooking lesson ever”. For Dylan “It smelt so good; it was so nice” that it could only be better if “we could eat it now!”. The group’s teacher, Meeta Rehinsi reflected, that the History lesson provided “Good links with the Food Tech workshop and good information for our topic next term. The pupils benefitted by gaining more understanding about the British Empire.” Reuben concluded, “It was Fun! Fun! Fun!”

Leighton Park’s Outreach and Partnerships programme aims to provide positive experiences for students that enhance their personal development as part of an holistic education. We often involved our own students in workshops to provide leadership opportunities for them. These mutually beneficial events grow partnerships between schools and students and reinforce our Quaker values of equality, respect and integrity.
