The Sixth Form charity group, Amicus, have had a tremendously successful year supporting a variety of worthy charities and encouraging the spirit of generous giving across the School community. They have raised almost £4,000 of funds for both local, national and international causes and delivered a number of events which have brought together students from across the School, united in their desire to help others.
Amicus member, Delya (Lower Sixth) commented, “Amicus is important because it instils the values of peace and charity and it is really important in this fast-moving world that we get to know about these things. I thought it was a really good concept when I wanted to join; that was my main motivation for getting involved. Most of the organisation is done by students so it’s also a really good way to invoke your teamworking skills and your leadership skills.”
Fellow member, Marta (Lower Sixth) agreed, saying “It’s not something led by a teacher, of course we have Pablo’s help, but it’s us deciding what to do with the money and how to earn the money. We can decide what charities to invest in to make the biggest difference in the world.”
During the Autumn term the group focussed on clothing with a non-uniform day and a Christmas jumper day alongside the Reading Toys and Teens appeal which saw the School collecting over 300 games, toys, dressing up and gift toiletries for local families in need of some festive presents for their children. The Spring term was dominated by the romantic delights of Valentine’s Day as Amicus combined with the Social Enterprise Group to deliver heart themed notes and red roses to students and staff on the Park in February. More non-uniform days followed across the Summer term including a push for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal which raised £1,250.
The group’s activities raised a grand total of £3,650 over the academic year with Save the Children (£500), Reading Family Aid (£400) and Fundacion Allegro cataract appeal in Ethiopia (£1,500) also benefitting.
Despite the focus on fundraising, the group also found time to undertake good works around the Park with a litter pick in June collecting five bags of rubbish from around the Park. Thank you Amicus!
