Artificial Intelligence: A View of the Future

On Tuesday 21st March, Miles Berry, Professor of Computing at University of Roehampton, visited Leighton Park to deliver a presentation on Artificial Intelligence in education to our Senior School students. Those interested in Computer Science, Physics and Psychology were treated to an insight into the advice Miles has provided to shape the government’s approach to Computer Science in schools. His talk, entitled ‘What should we teach children about AI?’ covered the British curriculum and its purpose, the concept of intelligence, logic and coding, a range of applications and the ethical implications of AI in education. Our students most enjoyed Miles’  interactive demonstrations of AI in practice, classifying stuffed toys and detecting speech. All students were intrigued by conversations around the use of AI (specifically ChatGPT) and the impact this has on academic honesty.

Organised by Head of Computing and ICT, Leila Bahrami, the talk was well attended and appreciated by those who were able to join the event. Jordan Kraus-Harvey, Leighton Park’s Data Systems Manager, commented, “The talk was focused on current key developments in AI, including applications such as ChatGPT, and was an open forum to discuss the impact and application of such AI developments in the field of education.”

Jordan continued, “Recent developments in AI provide students with a new and very cutting-edge learning development tool, and academic honesty policies are being updated to include references to these technologies. By understanding how these technologies work, our students can get a better understanding of their place in academia as well as being well informed on the impact that this can have if detected/used as plagiarism. It is our hope that by educating all students on these technologies, they will be better equipped when they inevitably end up as part of academia/working practice in the very near future.”

In their feedback, one student commented, “I thought that the talk was very informative and we got to engage with the speaker. What an immersive experience! I can’t wait for the next talk and the coordination of the event was on point. Thank you Leila for the wonderful afternoon that has further solidified my knowledge on the future of the metaverse.” Whilst another agreed “It was overall very interesting, especially for a Computer science student like me who seeks to work in the same area of work.”
