Artist Spotlight

The Art Department are keen to share the work of their talented students with the wider School community and regularly showcase individual artists in the School restaurant, Oakview, a space where most visit at least once a day.

With the onset of the Summer Term and the promise of sunshine, the team are delighted to shine a light on the work of A Level artist Annie (Upper Sixth). Annie has long been an advocate for celebrating nature and preserving the fragility of our planet and ecosystem, so much so she hopes to further her studies in Biological Sciences next year at degree level.

Much of the work on display examines the crossover between the inherent beauty of the natural life cycle and its fragility that we are part of it. Annie’s ideas build on her fascination and concern for the ocean and its pollution explored during GCSE.  Now as she concludes her A Levels, Annie’s work is more centred around the intricate relationship between humans and nature.

Discussing her work Annie relayed, “It calls for a heightened awareness of environmental issues and a deep respect for nature. In my work, I chose a photograph of my dog, captured in a moment of serene repose. From her body, flowers bloom, and branches weave through the crevices, symbolising nature’s boundless vitality.”

Mark Wood, Head of Art, commented, “While the underlying narrative is one of concern, Annie reassures us that the beauty of the materials she uses offer hope through their use of colour, delicate texture and craftsmanship. Working in clay, paint and specialist craft paper, we hope her work lets us reflect on the seasonal change and our appreciation of the surrounding park’s flora and fauna.”
