On Saturday 10th June, several students represented Leighton Park at the Berkshire County Championships. Director of Sport, Simon Bradbury, was particularly pleased with the progress of Youssef in Year 9, after he qualified for the 300m finals, only having run the distance since the beginning of this year!
“My first race was in April, I got 41.5 seconds. I’ve since cut that down by 3.5 seconds.” commented Youssef. “I’ve been running for quite a while, but I haven’t previously known a particular distance that I’d run. I love running and go to Reading Athletics Club.”
With a time of 38.4 seconds, Youssef came third place out of six athletes in the Junior 300m: “The school is very supportive and is going to take care of the national finals in Birmingham!” he enthused.
Simon commented, “Youssef performed incredibly well in what was against a top field and on a sweltering day. Youssef won his heat well and performed really well in the final to make the time to represent Berkshire in the English Schools Athletics Championships. It is a fantastic reward for all the effort that he has put in during the season. We wish him all the best in Birmingham.”
