Excited members of the GCSE and A Level Dance cohorts immersed themselves in the sinister world of crime and intrigue on Thursday 17th October when they travelled to Oxford for the touring production of Rambert’s ‘Peaky Blinders’.
Students from Years 10 to the Upper Sixth were entranced by the production which followed the Shelby family from the trenches of Flanders to post-war Birmingham where against the city’s industrial backdrop Tommy encounters a mysterious newcomer, Grace. While Tommy is building his empire, Grace is operating as an undercover agent for Special Branch on a mission to get close to the heart of Tommy’s gang. As the story unfolds, hearts are broken, and revenge is sought.
The innovative Dance company have created a fantastic show which entertained as well as educated our Dance students. Head of Dance, Beth Butler, commented, “This trip will provide students with invaluable experience and enable them to develop their skills in appreciating dance, a vital element within the GCSE and A Level courses.”
Beth continued, “Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby” did not disappoint. [Artistic Director] Benoit Swan Pouffer has done a magnificent job of creating dance out of the BBC series ‘Peaky Blinders’. Rambert’s dancers are just exquisite making every movement phrase seamless and easy.”
Immy (Upper Sixth) enthused, “ It was absolutely incredible. I really understood the characters and narrative due to the expression of the dancers.” Charlotte concluded: “It was breathtaking. It really helped me understand what I need to bring to my quartet performance in relation to projection and focus.”
Dance scholar Issy added, “I liked the fact I had this opportunity to watch Rambert as a Year 9 student. Being part of the A Level dance quartet performing in the style of this dance is really developing my appreciation of dance in performance.”
