There were plenty of toe-tapping tunes at the Jazz Infusions Concert on Wednesday 19th November as our talented musicians took to the stage in Main Hall. With solos, duos and a variety of small jazz ensembles from across the year groups performing, the stage was alive with the sensational sounds of classics from Miles Davis and Charlie Parker alongside a stunning original composition. Students played several numbers each and instruments ranged from saxophone, piano, drums, electric bass, double bass, guitar and vocals.
Students are encouraged to participate in our Jazz ensembles through the extensive co-curricular programme and this popular opportunity to play jazz is available from Year 7 right through to the Upper Sixth. Students form ensembles across year groups according to the style of jazz that most interests them and providing a network of enthusiastic jazz musicians who learn from each other’s talents and advice as well as that of Head of Jazz, Stuart Barker.
Leighton Park’s Music Department has been nominated for Music Department of the Year two years running and over 60% of our students learn at least one instrument with one of our peripatetic music staff. The Michael Malnick Centre for Music and Media offers purpose-built spaces including a suite of sound-proof practice rooms and a live lounge recording studio alongside classrooms, instruments and music technology. The superb facilities and quality of teaching supports our students achieve their musical ambitions and we are proud that several Sixth Formers are selected each year for a place into competitive conservatoires and prestigious music courses at universities both in the UK and overseas.
