Annual Book Week was embraced by the Leighton Park community from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th March, opening with the beautiful pop-up book shop in the Cadbury Room. The Book Shop showcases favourite titles suggested by staff and students as well as providing a chance to browse lesser known titles and gain inspiration for everyone’s new favourite title!
Author Ali Sparkes delivered a side-splitting presentation to Year 7s detailing her journey from her school day scribblings to internationally successful, published writer in Peckover Hall on Wednesday 4th March. Ali’s hilarious anecdotes reassured students that with any creative pursuit there is a significant amount of rejection as well as praise, and that determination and a sense of humour, is an absolute necessity. A good agent can help too!
Ali followed her talk with two Library-based workshops where Year 7s were challenged to develop the concept for a novel, producing a title, blurb and a draft of the first page, working in small groups. Ali briefly summarised their writing and following a vote for the favourite options, provided some brief feedback on the reasons for the success of the preferred choices. Descriptive writing and the ability to ignite empathy in the reader were highly praised.
Book Week would not be complete without some unpredictable Guerrilla Poetry. Taking their imagination out of the classroom, Year 7 also delighted in sharing their poems with the School in exciting and unexpected ways; bursting into classrooms, they presented their verses with gusto!
On Thursday 5th the team at Thomas Franks brought Dr Seuss to the table in celebration of World Book Day. Book bunting adorned the walls of Oakview and Green Eggs and Ham or 1 fish 2 fish were just two of the delightful dishes on offer, with a fantastic Cat in the Hat cake to finish.
