Our Sixth Form Biologists were out on the Park on Monday 19th June for their fieldwork day armed with quadrants, measuring tapes and a variety of gadgets and gizmos for collecting data for statistical analysis.
The A Level students were focussed on meeting the requirements of their course for this this is a crucial assessment, whereas the IB students were able to take a more relaxed approach.
Head of Biology, Gemma Sims, explained that the students were looking at the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on a named species of their choice. A popular choice was the daisy, which was growing in abundance on Grove field! Students assessed density in a variety of conditions including the effect of trampling, mowing, moisture content and light intensity.
In the afternoon woodlice were given an experience in the choice chamber with options to head for dark, light, moist or dry areas. The statistical analysis was just as important as the fieldwork as students practised their maths to consider standard deviation, T tests, and chi-square in relation to their results.
