Career Development in Action: Mock Interviews

On Thursday 13th November, Year 11 students took part in a valuable career development experience, mock interviews held in our Austin Lecture Theatre. Generously supported by parent volunteers from a wide range of industries, the session gave students the chance to practise professional conversations, build confidence for real-life situations, and receive practical tips to prepare for future interviews. With less than 25% of young people in the UK ever having had part time roles before leaving school, the aim was to develop interviewing skills for part-time jobs, apprenticeships, university applications and job interviews beyond further education.

In preparation for the event, students developed their own CVs, honing their written communication skills and learning how to present their experiences, strengths, and personalities effectively as candidates.

We were delighted to welcome 28 parent volunteers representing diverse professions, each bringing unique insight and expertise. Over the course of 10–15 minute interviews, students engaged in authentic conversations, received constructive feedback, and experienced what a genuine interview setting feels like, an invaluable exercise in readiness and self-assurance.

Assistant Head: Pupil Personal Development, Sally Saunders, expressed: “Opportunities for our young people to experience interviews and putting themselves out of their comfort zones are really important. With fewer opportunities for part time work, students have often not had to attend an interview before leaving school or even university. Our wonderful parent body gave Year 11 students a real insight into the world or work in a safe and supportive way this morning. We are so grateful that they took time out from their busy schedules to play an important part in this career development project.”

Thank you to our parent volunteers for giving their time and guidance and for helping to boost our students’ confidence and career skills.

Reflecting on the experience, George (Year 11) said: “It was useful because they gave us feedback on the CV, what to add, what to take out, and tips and tricks for the interview as well. Things to say at the end, things to say at the start, eye contact, all the things you need. It was really helpful.”

Amber (Year 11) agreed, highlighting how the session helped her feel more at ease: “I think it was really good in helping you set up for real-world experiences like interviews. It really developed my confidence and helped me understand what a real interview would be like.”
