Celebrating our students’ impressive university offers

As our Upper Sixth are working hard on their exam preparation, we would like to reflect on their impressive performance this year and the wonderful job they have done as role models at the top of the School. We are proud of all our Sixth Form leavers and support them in whichever paths they wish to take after Leighton Park.

Those choosing to apply to universities have achieved very impressive offers.  This includes some of the most coveted degree programmes at world-leading universities, Creative Arts degrees at specialist institutions and most importantly the universities and degree programmes that the students really had their hearts set on.

Four students achieved Oxbridge offers and all seven who applied made it through to the interview stage. Cambridge offers include a Choral Scholarship to read Linguistics and two offers to read Engineering, with one offer to read Music at Oxford. Four students achieved offers to Imperial to read Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Biological Science, with two offers from UCL in Engineering and Architectural Design and Education, Society and Culture.

The following universities proved most popular, with the number of offers shown in brackets: Exeter (21), Southampton (17), Birmingham (16), Bristol (13), Loughborough (11), Warwick (9) and King’s College London (7).

51% of our students’ university offers were in STEAM-related degrees, like Engineering, Design, Architecture or Medicine. 24% were in Business, Finance or Management and 11% were in the Creative Arts in areas like Music, Film Production or Computer Game Design.

The School’s STEAM focus was reflected by our students achieving 44 offers for Engineering degrees, 18 in Psychology, 11 in Design, 11 in Chemistry, six in Computer Science, six for Neuroscience, five in Biology and three offers in Medicine. Business also proved popular with 52 offers as did Law with 11 offers and Sport-related degrees with 8 offers.

Reflecting the School’s focus on Creative Arts, there were 17 offers related to Film and Filmmaking, eight offers related to Computer Game Design and five for Music degrees.

Leighton Park offers the IB Diploma Programme as well as A Levels and our IB students have achieved particularly impressive offers. As a prestigious international programme, nearly half of our students decided to apply to leading universities in other countries. Offers to UK universities include Medicine at King’s College London, Edinburgh and Bristol, Neuroscience at Warwick, Birmingham, Exeter, Bristol and Cardiff, Law at Queen’s University Belfast, Birmingham and Southampton, Engineering at Queen Mary University and Business Economics at Exeter.

Our Careers Department and Aspiring High Programme supports students with targeted and specialist support. As well as our Oxbridge, Medicine, Law and overseas universities pathways, we organise an impressive programme of inspirational speakers throughout the Sixth Form. Students are supported with individual and group careers tutorials and can explore their interests at our Careers Fairs. We organise trips for our students to meet our former students who are now studying at their preferred universities, and match our students with Old Leightonians working in their dream careers – for advice and practice interviews.
