The changemakers at Leighton Park have been making a difference with literacy in the local area by helping students in KS2 with their reading. Sixth Formers have started visiting New Christ Church, Whitley Park and Christ the King this term to support a new outreach reading initiative with our Lower Sixth students. Their three visits over the course of the Spring Term have been enjoyable and educational and we hope to continue building on the reading relationship with the primary schools, who are all members of the Whitley Excellence Cluster. Prior to beginning their reading support Lower Sixth Formers attended a structured training programme with Assisting Berkshire Children to Read (ABCtoRead), to ensure they had the skills necessary to support younger children’s literacy.
The Year 10s Community, Activity, Service (CAS) programme has continued to help Year 4 pupils at Loddon Primary School improve their reading and writing outcomes often sitting in the garden at Loddon and meeting their Year 4 literacy partners al fresco.
Both of these outreach activities are part of our broader commitment to supporting the local community and to making a difference in the lives of others, in line with the Quaker values on which the school is founded. The testimonies of simplicity, trust, respect, equality, peace, integrity and sustainability, are woven into every aspect of life at Leighton Park and opportunities like this to put our values into action are essential for our students to mature into kind and responsible citizens of the future.
