Christmas Crowns

With a little help from some Sixth Form Christmas elves, Fryer have been celebrating the season sustainably.

Eager to spread some cheer as we approach the end of term, Prefects and Eco Schools group set Year 7 and 8 the challenge of creating their very own winter wreaths, using material foraged from the Park.

Adjudicating on the criteria of originality and creativity, panache and skill, festivity, colour and smell, the judges were suitably impressed by the quality and diversity of submissions, which each offered something unique.

The panel, made up of Head, Matthew Judd, Eco Schools Leader and Biology Teacher, Jo Toovey, Art Teacher, Ella Langer and Assistant Head: Co-Curricular and Outreach, Natasha Coccia, each brought their different areas of expertise to the judging.

From fir and berries to papier-mâché stars and pinecones, some wreaths were memorable for their glorious extravagance and others their traditional charm, whilst two stood out for their reflection on the School’s Quaker values.

Jo remarked “It was great to watch the Fryer’s and Boarder’s enthusiasm for sustainability in action. There were some amazing and unusual designs, including scented wreaths and ingenious use of recycled and biodegradable materials. What a treat to spend time judging such marvellous creations! Well done to all who participated.”

Ella commented “I was really impressed by the creative input from all! Lots of unique ideas alongside some beautiful, traditional designs. They look like Christmas, smell like Christmas and everyone has done a fantastic job! I was particularly impressed by the consideration of Quaker Values in some of the designs and the personal touches that made each and every one unique. Well done all!

Natasha added “This year the Fryer students have saved Christmas on the Park! What I enjoyed about these wreaths is that when we looked closely at them they had been personalised to showcase the personalities and talents of each tutor group. Some had our Quaker values beautifully adorned on them and others had messages of hope. An absolutely brilliant effort from the Lower School and Boarding Houses. I love walking into Townson each day and seeing an LP wreath hanging from the door before I turn on my computer!”

Gemma Sim’s, Head of Biology, was delighted to share the news with her Tutor group that they had been awarded first place for their thoughtful, Quaker design. Her students were even more excited to see their wreath hung on the entrance to Old School. Liza Reskalla’s and Ellie Smales’ Tutor groups were each commendable runners up, with their wreaths decorating Peckover’s doors.

Tutee, Livi, in Year 8 commented “The fact that the wreath was sustainable really reminded us of the Quaker values and the ethos that leads so much of Park life. Christmas is a time of peace and community in so many religions that we wanted to include the Quaker values in our winning wreath!”

Our boarders also partook in the festivities, adorning Christmas wreaths to welcome students and staff into their Houses. The garlands are now being enjoyed by everybody as they hang on buildings around the School.
