Combatting Homelessness: The Big Sleep Out

Four of our Year 10 Global Perspectives students, Hermione, Charlotte, Tom and Mattia, inspired 34 students from Years 7-10 to sleep out on the Park to raise money for Launchpad Reading, a local charity combatting homelessness.

The group gathered on the cricket pitch with tents and cardboard boxes and spent the evening socialising before putting up their tents or building their accommodation out of cardboard. Some people definitely slept better than others but there was a sense of achievement for all in making it through the night for a good cause.

Hermione commented: “Everyone got involved with all the activities that we set up and all of the activities went well. We all got inspired because for our Global Perspectives project we wanted to try to raise awareness for homeless people in Reading and help them so we thought of raising money. Camping on the Park was a lot of fun and we got to have fun with our friends and experiencing what it was like to feel homeless. We all felt very proud of ourselves and on the night we had already reached our goal of £500 and we are now on £601.”

There have been three previous Big Sleep Outs held at Leighton Park for Launchpad Reading by the school community who have a history of supporting the fight against homelessness with other activities such as a 24-hour cyclathon and styling Richard Duckett’s lockdown beard!
