Cricket Week 2023

Cricket Week 2023 was off to a strong start for the Leighton Park 1st XI with a victory over The Forty Club in Monday’s match; two wickets for Chloe helped restrict the visitors to 188 before they declared. Oscar (47) and Louis (49) fell just short of half centuries and Captain Henry with 57 got the team over the line!

One parent commented “A great experience for the girls to be a part of, thank you to everyone involved for making it an enjoyable day of cricket.”

South District Chairman of The Forty Club, Derek Candy, reflected “It’s always been great to come here, we play in some big schools and some small schools and certainly Leighton Park is a favourite; we never have a problem getting the team here. We’ve always been warmly welcomed, and the students have always been great. If we can come here and see some good batting, some good strokes and some good bowling, the result is really second as far as we’re concerned. That’s our main thing – to come here and show the students how cricket should be played!”

On Tuesday, a competitive match was played between the girls in Games, followed by the Boys’ U14As and U15As who competed at Reddam House. Later in the week the Girls’ U14As and U15As went on to respectively represent at Bradfield College and Heathfield School.

Midweek, as we hosted Marylebone Cricket Club, PE Teacher, Sam Bowers, remarked “I’ve seen some good bowling from Nihaal and Freya has seen them take big wickets. The batting has been hard work against quality bowling.”

Freya’s work was recognised by the MCC Captain when he later awarded her the ‘Spirit of Cricket’: “Just being able to be outside and in the sun with some friends playing a sport I really enjoy has been really nice.” commented Freya. “Being able to play against higher level teams and them helping me improve my skills has been really fun.”

On Thursday we were excited to welcome Bohunt School Wokingham, Heathfield School, Reddam House, The Holt School and The Piggott School for this year’s Girls’ Cricket Fest; a fantastic afternoon of camaraderie and sport!

To mark the end of this year’s celebration, the Old Leightonians found themselves triumphant against the student side. Here’s to another brilliant week of cricket!
