The Year 7s were treated to week of cultural diversions, interesting museums and a series of fun activities in between during their Activities Week in Bristol and Bath between Monday 20th and Thursday 23rd June.
Their itinerary was led by school travel experts Halsbury Travel who based the group in Bridgwater for their day trips to some of the country’s most significant tourist sights. With everything from Bristol Zoo to Bath’s beautiful Royal Crescent and the Roman Baths there really was something for everyone to enjoy! The Bristol Aquarium was a highlight and Brunel’s wonderful ship, the SS Great Britain, offered a fascinating insight into one of the successes of the industrial revolution and linked to other Bristol engineering phenomena such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Bristol Aerospace with its Concorde plane was fantastic and really pulled together many of the STEAM education strands woven into the Fryer curriculum at Leighton Park.
Freya Davis, Resident PE Graduate who accompanied the trip, commented, “It was really good fun; the weather really helped. The children really enjoyed the history aspects of it; there was loads to see at loads of museums. we were constantly busy, loads to enjoy, really tiring!”
Alex (Year 7) enthused, “I have been to Bath before with my parents; this time was different because I had forgotten a lot of the details except the Roman Baths as they are really cool. We had audio tour guides which linked to the numbers on the walls so we could listen to what we were looking at as we walked around. In the zoo the seals were amazing and I bought a sloth, now sitting in my room, called Steve! My favourite part was aerospace – I got to stand inside concorde and we took some photos!”
Anna (Year 7) added “I’ve never been to Bristol before, it was new and really fun. I think it was more fun than educational but you did get to learn a lot of new things. It was a different environment and I got to meet lots of new friends. Now that we are coming to the end of Year 7 I think this was a really nice way to finish it off. My favourite part was the zoo, I love animals and we heard lions roaring. It was amazing! There were some butterflies; it was like a rainforest; I absolutely loved it!”
