On Tuesday 20th June 22 Leighton Park Sixth Formers delivered an Inclusive Festival of Sport, in association with the Independent Schools Association and Power2Inspire, to Year 7 and 8 students from Leighton Park, LVS Ascot and Luckley House.
Amongst the sport taking place was boccia, goalball and sitting volleyball. In boccia athletes must throw, kick, or use a ramp to propel a ball onto the court with the aim of getting closest to a ‘jack’ ball; goalball sees opposing teams bowl a ball with internal bells, along a court with tactile lines to score goals; and seated volleyball subtly adapts the fast-paced game to a smaller court with a lower net.
Prior to the festival, the young leaders attended a training session with John Willis, founder of Power2Inspire and all-round inclusive sport role model. Lower Sixth student, Harriet, commented: “From John, I learnt that you can pursue anything if you put your mind to it; he did a challenge to do all the Olympic sports which was really inspirational. I led a sport called boccia which was great fun! This experience has challenged me to create more inclusive sessions when planning them. I have learnt to be more adaptable.”
Returning to the Park the following week for the festival itself, John remarked “We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary this year and it is absolutely wonderful to come to Leighton Park and celebrate an Independent Schools Association PowerHouseGames for the very first time.”
John continued, “It’s fantastic as it gets disabled and non-disabled children to play together and have fun. Rule number one at Power2Inspire is to have fun because when I was young, I was left on the bench, so we are just absolutely adamant that no one should be left on the bench.”
