Leighton Park’s second annual Diversity Week was celebrated w/c 13th June, within the international Pride month celebrations and slightly ahead of the national School Diversity Week this year. We launched the week with a fantastic Collect with GB Olympic Hockey players, Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh, whose same sex relationship has received positive but high-profile media attention. It was interesting to hear about their experiences of acceptance within the sporting world.
A Colour Run on Tuesday lunchtime saw students and staffing dressed in bright coloured tops and charging around the 2km circuit in raise awareness of diversity and keep fit at the same time! A calmer activity on Wednesday saw the creation of badges in the art room for alternative and neo pronouns. The week also included some incredible rainbow cupcakes courtesy of our lovely Thomas Franks catering team in Oakview and a discussion the Library with the Junior Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) talking about books which address gender stereotypes.
Dominic (Year 10) commented, “Diversity Week is so important to celebrate because allows us to acknowledge the history of diversity and what has had to happen in order for us to be in a position to celebrate diversity and also to make way for further diversity in the school community and acknowledge those of us who are diverse because we are of course, all diverse.”
The video made for the Leighton Park community about Diversity Week is available on youtube.
