Drop Everything and Read!

Following its success in November, today (Thursday 10th June), students were asked to ‘Drop Everything and Read’ as part of their weekly PSHE session.

“Students and staff loved it so much that we decided to do it again before the end of the year. It’s a great way to get students engaged and talking about current affairs.” commented Grace Ritchie, Librarian.

To begin the day, each student and member of staff received their personal copy of the ‘The i’; a national newspaper aimed at people of all ages and commuters with limited time. The paper proved to be a stimulus for various discussions on current affairs amongst tutor groups, from vaccine passports, to the 2020 Euros, to a spot of morning puzzling.

Grace continued “The i newspaper is a fantastic way to get a quick, straight-forward insight into today’s news. It’s so important that we are aware of what’s happening in the world around us, and reading newspapers is a great way of keeping up-to date. Our universe is a beautiful yet bewildering place and reading non-fiction can give anyone the tools to understand it.

I would encourage reading non-fiction to absolutely everyone. Some people may prefer the escapism of fiction, but you would be amazed at the enchanting worlds, fantastic beasts and captivating characters that can be found in reality!”

If further encouragement to Drop Everything and Read was needed, the Library teamed up with student-led charity, Amicus, to offer a second-hand book sale. From the Head’s Lawn students and staff got busy selecting their summertime reads.

The Library were delighted to rehome the books for them to continue giving pleasure to members of the community, whilst making space on the Library shelves for next year’s delivery of new and exciting reads!

All proceeds were donated to Books2Africa, a cause dedicated to “improving the quality of education in Africa through the provision of books, computers and educational resources that enable individuals and communities to acquire knowledge and achieve their full potential in a globalized world.
