Eco Schools Silver Award

The Sixth Form Eco Group and the Fryer Eco Club have joined forces this term to achieve the Eco Schools Silver Award, the next step in their journey to achieve the Green Flag for the School. Led by the School’s Sustainability Co-Ordinator, Oliver Staines, there have been a number of tasks which the team have completed for their application to be successful. The Award focusses on steps 4 and 5 of the programme which are Curriculum Links and Informing & Involving respectively. The achievement of the Silver Award means that the team are 80% of the way to reaching their target.

The group have continued to raise awareness through a video they made shown in eCollect in January and through regularly updating the Eco Schools noticeboard in Oakview throughout the term. The Little Eco Actions feature has provided top eco tips to parents, staff and students each week through the School’s eBulletin. The group have dedicated time to collecting evidence to show the use of sustainability and environmental awareness topics in the curriculum through subjects such as PSHE, Geography and Global Perspectives. The Fryers have also completed their cross-community transport survey and the results of this are being analysed.

Oliver commented that he was ‘mightily proud’ of the group’s efforts and the team are looking forward to working on the criteria for the Gold Award over the Summer Term.
