Our Changemakers talks are a vital asset to our School’s values and ethics. They allow a wide range of changemakers in all fields of work to discuss ethical practices to enhance our students’ understandings and perspective. We want our young people to understand how they can contribute and apply change making skills and knowledge to society and within their future careers.
On Thursday 12th October, Corporate Lawyer Nina Smith, member of Shoosmith Private Wealth team, joined Lower Sixth students to discuss ethical practices. In some practices individuals and reliant on being governed solely by the Solicitors’ Code of Conduct whilst others expand this and individual lawyers are encouraged to consider the spirit as well as the letter of the law.
Nina sparked discussion over the ethical decisions lawyers encounter daily and how they work in practice to allow ethical thinking to take place. Her talk also gave an insight into her career as a lawyer to potentially spark interest in students’ career choices. Nina’s best advice for our students moving forward into choosing careers in ethical practices was to “focus on what you enjoy, if you choose a field and role you are passionate about, you will be able to do it to the best of your ability and allow yourself to be steered in the best direction”.
Nina has become a friend of the School through our connection with Ethical Reading – an organisation that understands and celebrates the importance of ethics in business. Ethical Reading exists to encourage people to do the right thing for each other, the wider community, and the environment, aligning with our values as a School. Our connection with Ethical Reading facilitates our Changemaker programme and our students’ development.
Deputy of Academic, Alex Wallace, commented: “When making decisions in the big wide world, it is imperative we maintain an ethical approach to the decisions we make. Nina joined us this morning to challenge the students with some difficult real life ethical dilemmas from the legal world to unpick. We are incredibly grateful for her time and expertise this morning.”
