Empowering Mathematicians in a Student-Led Masterclass

Following the success of the Year 7 and 8’s workshop with the Royal Institute of Maths held in September, an enthusiastic group of Lower Sixth students embraced the opportunity to the challenge themselves to run their own Mathematical workshop, which would be presented to Primary School children.

The Lower Sixth students had observed the original RI workshop, studying how to present their Maths teachings and interact with younger pupils to cultivate an engaging environment for learning.

On Tuesday 21st November, the Maths masterclass commenced, where the five Sixth Form students conducted an engaging presentation centred around the fascinating topic of Mobius strips to two local Primary Schools; Southcote and Katesgrove Primary School. The LP students not only delivered the lesson, but also blended activities with informative content to create an interactive experience.

One of the leaders of the masterclass workshop, Chloe (Lower Sixth), commented “We prepared for the event by watching the Royal Institute Masterclass to Fryers, and then decided to do the presentation on mobius strips. We worked together to create the presentation and script, with help from Carol to know how many activities we needed to include. I think that we would all be happy to run another session, as the Primary School students seemed to all really enjoy the activities and discovered lots of new information.”
