Enriching English Literature Perspectives.

Thursday 19th October saw our Year 11 GCSE English students immersing themselves in an interpretive production of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, Romeo and Juliet at the Reading Rep Theatre. Whilst students have already completed their study of the text for their GCSE coursework, the “high-voltage” retelling of the theatrical performance offered the group an opportunity to broaden their drama and literary exposure with a fresh perspective.

Matt Taylor, Head of English commentedIt was an unusual retelling of the story set in a boys’ boarding school where a group of four students discover an illicit text which they then enact together. It was a very different performance laced with homoerotic undertones and very good to see an alternative production. I think the students all enjoyed seeing it.”

This inventive approach to the production was certainly a captivating experience, which undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the students, expanding their appreciation for arts and literature.

Leighton Park offers students a variety of theatre trips throughout their time at the school as well as excursions to exhibitions, galleries, outdoor spaces and more as part of our holistic education programme. Pupils benefit from extra-curricular activities by broadening their awareness of how knowledge learned in the classroom translates to their experience of the world beyond it.
