Experiencing Icarus

On Wednesday 27th February the English Department took students from Year 7 on a trip back to Ancient Greece and the story of Icarus.

The play, performed at the Unicorn Theatre, was especially designed for this age group so scooters, selfies and flossing were abound. The drum and bass soundscape was truly awesome and the jump scares were greatly enjoyed. The ancient tale was told with a modern twist and explored themes of family, authority and power, not to mention having a disco minotaur! The innovative set wowed all of us as Icarus crawled through the labyrinth and his fall into the sea was truly emotional. The students’ enthusiasm was infectious!

Leana Mikula, English teacher, commented “The sound effects and the modernisation of the story made it very exciting. It’s a great theatre for children and we really wanted to give students who maybe haven’t had a lot of exposure to theatre a positive experience. It was a great trip!”
