Over two days from 28th to the 29th of September, Leighton Park’s A Level Geography students embarked on a trip of dune succession and coastal case studies in the familiar and fabulous location of Margam Park Discovery. Students enjoyed their surroundings in the limited free time they had between their intensive geographical activities profiling the sand dune succession at Crymlyn Bay, gaining first-hand experience and understanding in both their Geography and Biology studies (for those who cross over with this A Level).
Oliver Staines, Geography Teacher, described some of their activities: “The students had great fun dusting off their GCSE trigonometry skills to convert the data they had collected to create a graphical cross-section of the dune system and transpose their other observations from the day”. To finish their first day of geography endeavours, essay plans were created for a past paper practice question on dune characteristics and formation.
On the second day, the groups had the important task of learning all about the sustainability of coastal management along an extended stretch of coastline from Newton to Porthcawl. In groups of four students collected data and performed a variety of surveys at ten different sites. After the second day’s activities, the groups headed back to Margam Park and spent an enjoyable afternoon outside in the country park grounds processing a lot of this data while it was fresh in their minds, The day once more culminated in producing an essay plan describing some of the problems of managing this coastline and evaluating the solutions.
