Exploring Perspectives with the Theory of Knowledge!

The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) module is a valuable part of our International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme here at Leighton Park School as it allows students to explore different ways of knowing and to reflect critically on how knowledge is gained. The IB Diploma recognises Theory of Knowledge as a core element and is a well-suited module for those who enjoy global perspectives as well as academic study. An important aim of TOK is to make students aware of how they interpret knowledge; what they know.  It also challenges students’ bias, including personal, cultural and ideological leanings.

On the morning of Tuesday 26th September our Upper Sixth IB students shared an exhibition in Peckover Hall showcasing their TOK understanding. This provided an invaluable opportunity for Upper Sixth students to discuss their work with the wider community, which included teachers and the students new to TOK such as the current Lower Sixth. Stephen Taynton, TOK teacher stated, “I am very impressed with the way students discussed their work with their teachers and peers, but equally impressed with the level of their academic responses to questions posed to them.”

During the TOK exhibition, students enthusiastically selected one of thirty-five TOK prompts and were able to demonstrate their adept critical thinking skills by applying their unique theories in the analysis of three objects of their choice. IB Student, Henry (Upper Sixth) commented “What I enjoy most about the IB programme is the broad variety of options you can explore, the project-based learning element of the course not only develops key skills for writing academically but also thinking critically. I personally explored the prompt of ‘Are some types of knowledge less open to interpretation than others’. I used a painting, my maths textbook and a novel I was reading as objects in order to explore this further. Linking this prompt to the real world required critically thinking about how to approach answering my prompt as well as what can I draw from my objects that will portray my approach. These skills aid me in all of my lessons and has shifted my perspectives in everyday life in a very positive way. Overall, the IB course has set me up with skills that will last a lifetime in both university and a career”.
