Exploring the Theory of Knowledge

The Upper Sixth International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) cohort were delighted to share their endeavours on the Theory of Knowledge course, a compulsory element of their globally-acclaimed qualification. It teaches students to question how we know what we know by exploring different perspectives across the world’s cultures, challenging personal and ideological assumptions and developing critical thinking. Students must each write a 1,600 word essay and mount an exhibition to obtain a successful pass.

On Wednesday 8th October the group showcased the three objects they had chosen to demonstrate their response to a query from the IB’s Theory of Knowledge question bank which includes stimuli such as ‘Why do we seek knowledge?’, ‘Are some types of knowledge less open to interpretation than others?’ and ‘What challenges are raised by the dissemination and communication of knowledge?’.

Sofia enthused, “I think that it’s a great opportunity to show what we have learnt and what TOK really is. I am really happy about the prompts that I chose and I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others.”

Classmate Juliana added, “I think that The TOK exhibition is a fun and valuable part of the course, It is interesting to look at three different object, it is open to your own interpretation and perspective of things. It is interesting to see how people respond to the prompts and see what they come up with.”

Kees Luteijn, Director of IB, “The exhibition as a whole is a really nice way to get students to think creatively as well as critically. I like the exhibition as It makes them apply what they’ve learnt to the real world around them and to discuss that with their peers and people across the school who they wouldn’t otherwise talk to about it. You’ve got nine different people here who are studying the same course but every single one of them has come up with something completely unique. The objects are specific to them and they are all different but they have all managed to talk about them in a specific and individual way; I really like the diversity you get even across a small cohort.”
