Debating Success at National Finals

Following on from success in the regional heats earlier this year, our Debating Matters Club travelled to Liverpool to compete in the European Youth Parliament debating competition, where they’ve had wonderful success.

The students were kept very busy at the four-day EYP residential at Liverpool Hope University. David Hammond, Head of Science, said in his opinion it was the best pre-university course he has ever seen. Richard Duckett, Assistant head of Sixth Form, added “This was a great experience for our students.  It was very well organised, and the standard of participation was extremely high.  I am really looking forward to entering the regional round again this year so that we can hopefully take another group of students back to Liverpool for the Nationals this time next year.  We are very proud of the amazing group of students we took to this!”

“It was a brilliant experience to meet new people and to learn how to create solutions to issues for debate” enthused Millie (Upper Sixth).

On arrival at Liverpool, students settled into student halls only briefly before being taken to Everton Park for a mass group ice-breaker session.  All sorts of activities got the students introduced before they were split up into their committees. Rather than a ‘LP Team’, each committee was made up of a student from each of the schools attending from across all regions of Great Britain.

Friday was spent working hard in committees all day and even after dinner, as they prepared for the General Assembly. On Saturday the General Assembly convened and the debates started, with all of our LP student representatives participating. The debates were to a very high standard, and the resolutions began to get passed on issues ranging from rehabilitation of criminals to gender equality.  A long day was followed by a quiz night.

The last day, Sunday, saw the final debates before leaving Liverpool in suspense, as we awaited the results from the panel of judges. The judges have now selected a committee to go through to the European Finals and Leighton Park is delighted that from about 120 students, three LP Students have been individually selected to go through to the European round of the EYP Competition. The successful Students are: Millie, Natalia and Alex all in Upper Sixth.

Natalia (Upper Sixth) said “I’m super excited about getting through to the international stage! It is an honour to have three of us individually selected, and I’m excited to find out where we’ll be going.”
