Following the launch of the 2022 Super Chefs competition on 17th January we have now enjoyed the company of four visiting schools for their KS2 cooking adventure. The completion of the first round by Thameside Primary, Hemdean House, Caversham Prep School and Ridgeway Primary School has seen beautiful fairy cakes in the Food Tech room every Thursday as the budding bakers create their masterpieces.
Led by Food Tech teacher, Jennie Hatton, the four groups of students have had the opportunity to watch an expert demonstration on how to cook a batch of a dozen perfect sponges and then ice their fairy cakes with panache using brightly coloured butter cream piping. We have seen decorations themed as monsters, unicorns, spiders and rainbows. Sprinkles and glitter have adorned every sponge surface and we have even had fondant creations by those adept with a rolling pin and icing scalpel.
Each round has concluded with the presentation of participation certificates for all, plus a runners up medal and a winners cup engraved with ‘Super Chefs 2022’ for the two most accomplished pairs from each school. The judges, Stephen Taynton and Debbie Ince, chosen for their love of cake, assessed the bakers on originality and creativity, teamwork, accuracy and ability, cleanliness and safe working.
Head of Caversham Prep School, Naomi Williams, commented, “it was so well organised, taught and executed. The children were totally absorbed and engaged for three whole hours. Amazing!”. Francesca, Year 5 pupil at Caversham Prep, agreed, “It was amazing and everyone working there was really lovely and helpful.”
Amiyah (Year 5, Hemdean House) reflected, ‘My favourite part was when the judges were looking at the cupcakes because it was really exciting and nerve-wracking!” whilst the only thing that her classmate Luke could suggest to improve the day was “It would be even better if I could have made the cakes bigger!”
