Floating on Air for Dance Week!

It was wonderful for some of our Dance scholars to end our busy Dance Week with a trip to the Tone and Poise studios in Heckfield on Friday 20th June.  The workshop was led by professional Claire Tyler-Hewinson, qualified to teach Beginner & Intermediate Hoop level, and Beginner Sling in her custom-built studio space.

Beth Butler, Head of Dance, was pleased that the dancers got to try something new and exciting as part of their Dance Week experience: “Students thoroughly enjoyed learning about this new way of moving. I even had fun myself trying this out! The silks were definitely a firm favourite as students felt so relaxed and it was amazing how the silk material holds a persons’ body weight.”

Claire said this is a great way for students to use their physical dance skill set to fly and channel their inner circus. Aerial hoop and sling really sets dancers apart from others allowing them to grab more performance opportunities.

Julia (Year 10) was delighted by the experience saying, “I loved the aerial silk because it was calming and I felt a lovely stretch throughout.”  Fellow dancer Tyler (Year 10) agreed, adding: “I loved both the hoop and silk. It was great having a completely new experience. I hadn’t realised how much technique is involved in this art form.”
