From RSC to RS Sea: A Level trip to Hamlet

On Saturday 1st March, a group of A Level English Literature students set off for a cultural experience at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon. The trip was organised to see Rupert Goold’s highly anticipated production of Hamlet, one of the set texts for their A Level course.

The production, which starred Luke Thallon as Hamlet and Jared Harris as the Ghost, was nothing short of spectacular. The students were treated to an innovative interpretation of Shakespeare’s iconic play, particularly impressed by the bold directorial choices. The unique stage design was especially striking, with the action unfolding on a tilting platform that created the effect of a ship lost at sea. The production’s atmosphere was both haunting and exhilarating, drawing the audience into the tragedy of Hamlet’s journey.

The experience brought the play to life in a way that was both enriching and thought-provoking. This unforgettable trip not only enhanced their understanding of Hamlet but also gave them a deeper appreciation for the power of live theatre. Jenny Powlesland, Head of Teaching and Learning & the Trip Co-ordinator on this occasion, summed up the experience perfectly, saying “We were universally agreed that this was an incredible production with some of the best casting we are ever likely to see. A really special day and a memorable interpretation of this great play: our students loved the brave directorial decisions, especially the tilting stage with the setting cast on a ship at sea!”
