Fryer Project Qualification Expo 2023

Leighton Park’s Fryer Project Qualification (FPQ) Expo 2023, the culmination of the two-year ‘Approaches to Learning’ programme, showcased the school’s commitment to fostering a spirit of inquiry, developing critical thinking, and cultivating practical skills, essential for lifelong learning. This year, the qualification engaged all Year 8 students, who embarked on a remarkable journey of intellectual exploration.

The uniqueness of the FPQ lies in its student-driven nature. Participants were encouraged to choose their own research titles and questions, enabling them to delve into areas of personal interest and passion. Each student crafted a dissertation of 1000 words, addressing an original research question that they meticulously explored. Moreover, they had the opportunity to present their findings before an esteemed audience comprising fellow students, teachers, and proud parents during an evening of academic celebration held in Peckover.

The success of the event was evident as the rooms of Peckover buzzed with enthusiasm. Students, parents, and teachers alike eagerly listened to the captivating presentations delivered by the students.

The chosen titles exhibited a wide range of subjects, including thought-provoking inquiries such as ‘Will nuclear fusion ever be commercially available?’, ‘How does media manipulation work?’, ‘Picky eaters: nature or nurture?’, ‘Why do humans love cats so much?’, and ‘Should we have a global currency?’. These topics aptly mirrored the core values and concerns that define Leighton Park’s approach to education.

Some tackled political issues, while many delved into sustainability and the pursuit of a better future. Others fearlessly challenged existing preconceptions and questioned the status quo. All the topics reflected the students’ personal passions and interests.

Jenny Powlesland, Head of Teaching and Learning and FPQ Co-Ordinator, expressed her thoughts on the valuable skills gained through the FPQ experience: “We think that the FPQ gives Fryers the opportunity to learn so many different skills. They get to research an area they are passionate about; we teach them really rigorous research skills so they’ll have written a fully footnoted, bibliography, referenced, dissertation no less than a thousand words… and of course they present at the expo so they’re getting that experience as well and they love it!”

The participants themselves found the experience deeply rewarding. Anders, who presented his research, reflected, “It was both kinds of good and nervous… If I had another question, I’d do it one more time”. Olivia expressed her inspiration after witnessing her classmates’ presentations: “After six months it’s finally come and it brings a sense of excitement to everyone, and it’s really inspiring watching other people do it because it gives you a buzz of excitement.”

A heartfelt congratulations goes out to all the Year 8 Fryers for their hard work and dedication. The success of the FPQ would not have been possible without the guidance and support of the teachers who oversaw the students’ progress in the ‘Approaches to Learning’ programme. Their commitment to education has empowered these young minds to explore, question, and embrace the joy of learning, setting them on a path of continuous growth and discovery.
