An enthusiastic Sixth Form fundraiser persuaded members of staff to exchange their Staff Fitness Session in the Gym for a friendly hockey match against students in aid of supporting The Christie NHS Foundation on Monday 14th January.
The organiser of the event, Kirsty (Upper Sixth), is a finalist for the Miss Teen Galaxy UK, which are pageants held in Manchester. Unlike most pageants, Miss Teen Galaxy UK doesn’t have any restrictions meaning the competition is much more diverse, accepting girls and women of all ages.
The Christie NHS Foundation in Manchester is supported by the Galaxy UK pageants and contestants can also choose to raise money for other charities if they wish to do so. Girls who take part in the pageants are encouraged to support each other with their community outreach ideas and is something which is taken into consideration along with their own fundraising efforts in the final on 9th March.
As a keen member of the Sixth Form fundraising group, Amicus, and having worked with Jinga Educational Trust (JET) on the Sixth Form Africa trip to Uganda, Kirsty decided to combine her passion for fundraising and her interest in pageants together.
“I thought a hockey competition would be a good idea to raise money because everyone plays hockey and it’s much more co-ed sport than others such as football or netball, and I thought it was a great way to bring the community together and inspire others to do things for the greater good.”
“Being involved in the Galaxy UK pageant has been a great experience so far; learning about and helping the other girls’ fundraising efforts. I decided to get involved in the pageant because the competition combines things I really enjoy such as community outreach and public speaking and the winner gets sponsored to do one year of service with a charity overseas. I would be interested to go back to Africa and work with JET again. I really enjoy art and would like to explore using art as therapy for ADHD, anxiety or depression.”
The winner of the final in March will be lucky enough to attend the Galaxy International Pageant in Florida in August – We wish Kirsty every success in achieving her ambitions and are pleased that the money raised from Monday’s hockey match will support the good work of The Christie in cancer research and care.
