Global Perspectives in Action

As part of their Global Perspective Project, Year 11 students Livi, Lana C, Lana L, and Antigoni are raising awareness about Cystic Fibrosis.

The four GCSE students invited the Year 7 students to a specially organised Collect, where they made a poignant presentation about Cystic Fibrosis and the challenges of living with this life-shortening condition. The narrative was enriched by sharing the personal story of Olivia Beaumont, a former student at Leighton Park, who lives with Cystic Fibrosis.

Reflecting on their connection to the subject through an Old Leightonian, Lana C expressed, “Having a connection with the topic through an OL was something that really improved our project and I think it gave the project a lot more emotional involvement.”

At the end of the presentation, the Year 7s were asked to attach paper flowers onto a pair of wire lungs, creating a beautiful visual representation. The Collect sparked an interest and awareness among the younger students, who engaged by asking further questions about Cystic Fibrosis.

Summarising the experience, Livi highlighted “The personal school connection to the topic enabled more Fryers to take something away, while the interactive element made our message a lot more accessible and memorable.”

The Global Perspectives GCSE offered at Leighton Park, is a stimulating course that stretches across traditional subject boundaries and develops transferable skills. This cross-curricular and skills-based approach aligns with the way learners of today enjoy learning, including teamwork, presentations, projects and collaborating with learners worldwide.
