Leighton Park’s creative students in Years 7 and 8 together with our Art Scholars have completed their designs and decoration of an Aardman Animations sculpture, Norbot the Gnome, ready for a national exhibition in September!
Our artists were keen to link up with Aardman’s latest wheeze to raise funds for the Bristol Children’s Hospital facilitated by the initial investment from the school’s STEAM team and a generous donation from the PSC. The popularity of Norbot has soared following the festive release of the Aardman studio’s feature-length animated adventure, ‘Vengeance Most Fowl’ last Christmas and decorating a sculpture of this key character has really fired our students’ imaginations.
The Leighton Park Norbot will be part of an exhibition in Bristol featuring hundreds of Norbot the Gnomes that have been decorated by various groups across the country. The Norbots offer fundraising opportunities for each community and the proceeds from The Grand Appeal 2025 will support the work of Bristol Children’s Hospital.
Head of Art, Mark Wood, who has co-ordinated the project enthused: “The good news is our scholars have largely finished painting Norbot, taking inspiration from a range of designs submitted by Fryers as part of their CAS programme and co-curricular club, Stressless Art. The selected designs were partly inspired by our Leighton Park Learner Profile, with a shared focus on sustainability and the environment. Students wanted to reflect an aspect of the Park into the design with a subtle nod to our oak leaves and the large variety of floral colour on display in the Summer Term.
Creative problem solving and teamwork are two aspects of our STEAM academic approach which brings together the imagination of the Arts with the practical logic of STEM. We are delighted that the Norbot project also builds our students’ awareness of their ability to help others and aligns with our strengths in values-led education, recognised by our recent ISI report.
We look forward to welcoming Norbot back to Park in October to re-join school community, as our very own mascot of creativity and biodiversity.
