Our Year 10 scientists took part in the National Scientific Thinking Challenge in June, run by Warwick University. Schools from across the UK take part, with students sitting a 50 minute test on diverse questions like: why is it difficult to open a freezer door straight after you have closed it, what is happening to bottle nosed dolphin populations, and which are the most effective scientific sampling techniques.
10 of our students achieved Gold Certificates, putting them in the top 10% of more than 13,000 students that entered. Oscar scored a remarkable 94%, with several students scoring 88%, including Antigoni, Sasha, Harrison and Matthew. A further seven students were awarded Silver Awards and five gained Bronze Awards.
Our innovative approach to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) places real emphasis on harnessing our students’ creative talents and blending them with skills in critical thinking, creative problem solving, entrepreneurship and leadership as part of our vibrant interdisciplinary curriculum.
We challenge our students to apply these skills to real-world problems facing industry and society today. With our explicit focus on creativity, we give girls and boys everything they need to take an idea and make it fly. Most recently, our approach has helped the School win the 2020 Award for Excellence in STEAM Education as part of the Education and Training Awards.
Students have lots of opportunities to push themselves, including Maths Kangaroos and Olympiads, extending their knowledge through our co-curricular clubs, including STEAM Projects, Makers Club, Drone Club, Changemakers Alter Eco, NEWTs, 3D Computer Aided Design, Model Plan Club, Music Tech Club etc. Leighton Park is one of only a handful of Schools to offer Engineering as a GCSE subject.
