Grand Masters Ahoy! LP’s House Chess Tournament

The annual House Chess Tournament took place on Monday 18th November with one student per year group from each House gathering in the futuristic Maths building to tackle their games with strategy and skill.

Live matches were supplemented by online games with additional points per House awarding for the number of House participants using www.chess.com.

Daniel (Year 11) was enthusiastic about his experience: “I’ve never been very good at chess but I think it’s the fact that you get the House competition and everybody just wants to play each other and to get involved.”

Tournament co-ordinator and Chess Club leader, Tom Cartmill, “It gives them an opportunity to excel at something and to be noticed for something different to other arenas like sport for example. It’s also a lovely way to bring students together from different yeargroups. Representing your House within the cohort of your year is also quite an unusual thing. We are also bringing in fresh blood to the after school Chess Club; hoping that a few of them might sign up for the Spring Term!”

Students have been practising by playing in Chess Club over the first half of the term every Monday and by taking advantage of the giant chess set outside Old School. Year 7, Chess Club regular, Yaya, recommends joining,  “It’s very fun!” she said.
