Grand Masters Go Large!

A new addition to the Park has appeared by Old School offering our students both intellectual stimulation and a relaxing hobby! The inaugural game on the gigantic chess board was undertaken by students in Year 9 and above, aided by the team from the Maths Department, Zack Bassman who oversees the School’s Chess Club and Mark Budge, STEAM Co-ordinator.

Mark explained, “The chess set was bought as part of the School’s vision to further integrate the natural environment and learning – and it is also fun! Chess is really popular around the School and will become even more so with the House chess competitions gaining momentum.”
Zack, who made the first move on the new board, added “We had lots of help from Mark’s tutor group who carried all the chess pieces over; it was the ‘Walk of the Chess Pieces’. This marks a new chapter in the start of Leighton Park chess!”
Both are looking forward to the start of the extensive co-curricular programme on Monday 11th September, which offers students in excess of 90 hobbies, including chess! You can find out more about it, including what’s on offer this term on our website.
