Guys and Dolls Auditions

The Autumn term has kicked off with a buzz of excitement as talented actors, brilliant dancers and wonderful singers have given the Senior Production auditions their best shot! There were separate auditions in front of Peter Scoggins, Head of Drama, Beth Butler, Dance teacher and Rosemary Scales, Director of Music and Media, for the three performance techniques, acting, dancing and singing, before the directors consider who to cast in the variety of roles. With the announcement due on Tuesday 21st September, everyone is on tenterhooks!

Beth Butler, Dance teacher, commented “It was excellent to see so many students from all year groups involved especially students who have not ventured into the dance studio with me before. I was looking to see who could pick up movement material quickly yet also those who demonstrated tenacity in rehearsal. It is not all about getting the movement material accurate it is about the communication with the audience. How does one engage using focus and projection? I cannot wait to start creating with the students. The work of Bob Fosse was a challenge yet audiences are not as familiar with the choreography of Michael Kidd. I am looking forward to exploring a more traditional use of classical technique whilst still allowing the dances to support the plot.”

‘Guys and Dolls’ by Frank Loesser is set to go on in February 2022, so there is no time to lose for the rehearsals that will make this year’s musical as stunning as previous productions including ‘Chicago!’, ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Sweeney Todd’ and ‘Parade’. ‘Guys and Doll’s won the 1951 Tony Award for Best Musical after it premiered on Broadway in 1950 and was succeeded by a film version in 1955 featuring the star-studded cast of Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Vivian Blaine and Jean Simmons. The story has lost none of its appeal over the years and we’re looking forward to seeing the audience rapt by the twists and turns of the thrilling plot.

New York City gamblers Nathan Detroit and Sky Masterson bet on Sky’s ability to woo Save-A-Soul Mission leader, Sarah Brown, whilst Nathan tries to keep his fiancée of 14 years, Adelaide, despite being tied up in some complicated card game shenanigans which seem set to derail the romance throughout. With character reformations and a wedding as the grand finale, there are plenty of smiles at the conclusion, and with an aural treat of a score, the outstanding music and energetic dancing throughout is guaranteed to delight the audience.
