Harmony in Action: Students Spread Musical Joy

Taylor (Lower Sixth) was the guest of honour at Woodley’s A440 Choir Jazz Night on Saturday 8th November delivering a mesmerising performance. Taylor’s success at the 2025 Woodley Festival won him a place in the spotlight where he delivered one of his own compositions, a saxophone sonata, a piece for piano and voice and an accompaniment to the choir’s delivery of ‘Fly Me to the Moon’.  Taylor enthused, “Playing with the A440 choir was a wonderful experience, the choir was very professional and when they sang the music was very powerful and expressive. It was a very lovely experience, they all enjoyed my presence and were very lovely people. My own written Saxophone concerto , ‘Romance’, was inspired by some love stories in nature and the theme of staying together even after tough times. Leighton Park provides such a good platform allowing us to express ourselves freely musically and with the lovely support from the Music Department staff who enhance our musical journey. When I leave school, I am planning to study Music at Oxford.”

Oscar (Upper Sixth) with Eva and Leonie (both Lower Sixth) performed together at Cadogan Hall during half term as members of the acclaimed English Schools Orchestra.

Ollie (Year 11), a talented trumpeter, almost ceased playing prior to joining Leighton Park and we are so glad that he didn’t! In addition to playing ‘The Last Post’ both on the Park and at local venues for Remembrance Day, Ollie has been selected to take part in the Birmingham Tattoo in February 2026. Rosemary Scales, Director of Music, commented, “I am so delighted that he didn’t give up before he reached us and that he gets so much joy from it. I am really proud of the progress, and resilience, that he has shown so far.”

Music is a real strength of the school with the team being nominated for Music Department of the Year two years running! Over 60% of our students learn at least one instrument with one of our twenty seven peripatetic music staff and benefit from workshops and experiences delivered by our music partners, Yamaha, Sontronics and Steinberg. In addition to Music and Music Tech A Levels the department offers BTECs in Creative Digital Media Production and in Digital TV & Film Production. There are a wide variety of co-curricular activities with everything from orchestra and senior choir to smaller ensembles across strings, wind, brass, jazz and more. The facilities housed in the state of the art Music Department opened in 2020 offer a ‘Live Lounge’ recording studio, seven practice rooms and three classrooms, fully equipped to meet every musical need!
