Hi Fives in STEAM for Highfield!

We were delighted to welcome Year 5 students from Highfield Prep to the Park on Thursday 2^nd May for their very first DT & Engineering workshop!

The group of excited pupils from Maidenhead were keen to get stuck in and discover the practical applications of gears, ratios and iterative design with our enthusiastic DT team. Jeff Fuller and Michelle Darracott.

The students built LEGO cars from scratch using the instructions provided and then absorbed the principles of engineering from Jeff’s classroom session accompanied by an informative video. They were then released to design, build and test on repeat in their effort to create the most effective version of their LEGO vehicle. The cars were challenged by a ramp of increasing gradient and the pupils were pleased to see the difference their changes made to the success of the cars’ movements.

Sarah Bolton, Highfield’s Year 5 teacher, was pleased that her students had joined in so enthusiastically, commenting: “They loved the opportunity to see / experience a great DT set up. It was very successful in achieving our aim of learning to collaborate and ‘debug’. Jeff was very inspiring.”

My favourite part of the workshop was when we ran into problems and had to fix them.” declared Calliope. “My favourite part was testing the car. It was very fun and interesting.” Added Livia. “It was so fun, I had a brilliant time!” enthused Arleen.

The session concluded with lunch in the school’s Oakview restaurant which for some students was as popular as the workshop! “ The DT Department was amazing. I loved it there and the food was good too!” concluded Lana.
