History with Author and Royal Commentator Dr Ed Owens

On Monday 7th February, our Sixth Form and scholarly Historians were treated to a seminar with author and royal commentator, Dr Ed Owens.

“It was great to have Dr Ed, author of The Family Firm: Monarchy, Mass Media and the British Public, 1932-53 in school today, sharing insights into the monarchy past, present and future. Engaging, informative, and thought-provoking!” commented Deputy Head, Eddie Falshaw, who formally taught Ed History as a school student.

Eddie continued, “I have fond memories of Ed going back 19 years now – I remember we used to study 1930s Britain in lots of detail and Stanley Baldwin was a key figure that Ed enjoyed studying – he remembered the pipe I used to use as a prop in lessons to try and make him come alive a little bit more!!! He (Stanley Baldwin) was a Worcestershire man, so not far from the school Ed and I were at, Hereford Cathedral School.”

“He was always a good historian, but when he left I don’t think either of us thought he would end up doing it professionally! That came during his year out when he had that moment of clarity. I also coached Ed rugby and cricket and we travelled to Ireland and France on tours as well as many fixtures home and away.”

With the roles now reversed, after the class, Dr Ed remarked to Eddie and fellow students “Thank you for having me and for asking such brilliant questions.”
