House Charities Making a Difference

School House were proud to hand over sackfuls of collected clothes and shoes for donation to Bag2School on Wednesday 1st November as students, staff and parents contributed a massive 211kg of garments to the House charity appeal. Bag2School is an organisation which collects good quality second hand clothing and re-distributes it to those in need. In addition, the donor receives a small amount of cash per kg of donated clothing which can be given to a second charity. In the case of School House’s collection, the beneficiaries of our 30p per kilogram efforts were Reading Refugee Centre who will receive £63.30 from Leighton Park. The bonus of Bag2School is that the donations from the school community help two charities as well as supporting the circular economy and helping to prevent waste going to landfill in line with our Quaker testimony of sustainability.

Historically, clothing collected by Reckitt House and School House, often from boarders leaving the country and not wishing to take their garments home, has been given by ex-crew members from a reputable airline directly to St Nicholas School in Ghana, flown out by their former colleagues. The pandemic has prevented this practice because of reduced flights and increased concerns over Covid-19 so the work with Bag2School is a great interim solution which continues to make a difference. Bag2School organiser and House Manager of School House, Sharon Harpin, commented “If you have a little bit, you should give a little bit. It’s something everyone can be involved with, students, parents and staff. It’s an easy way to help other people.”

Reckitt House’s chose charity, Berkshire Women’s Aid, which supports victims of domestic abuse and violence, will shortly be receiving donations of crockery, bedding and toiletries which have been collected by the girls’ boarding team and by the school community.
