House Essay Competition

Deputy Head, Eddie Falshaw, launched a new House competition this term offering students the opportunity to expand their academic horizons and produce an essay on a topic of their choice.

The judges applied a range of stringent criteria ranking reach answer from 1 (the strongest) to 12 in each category as they considered four key attributes of each essay. These included understanding of the topic, original thinking relative to the topic, effectiveness in presenting a point-of-view/ argument and finally literary style and referencing.

Thomas (Year 7) entered because he was keen to support his House and as a member of the School newspaper club, “wanted to do some writing in the process.” Thomas went on to explain the ideas behind his essay ‘Were the lockdowns worth it?’ saying, “I was inspired by looking at data and drawing some comparisons between the sets of data that I used.”

Maiya (Year 9) was surprised by her success with her essay ‘Does Prison Work?’

“I was a bit confused when they called my name out, I thought it would be someone else! I decided to enter because I like writing and I also like the researching side of it. I think writing essays can sometimes be fun.”

Our final winner, Chloe (Year 11) was awarded her prize for her exploration of power in the essay ‘In the 21st Century, what is monarchy for?’ and her detailed consideration of government, media, religion and psychology in the political balance between democracy and monarchy.
