On Sunday 6th October, Leighton Park Sixth Formers studying for the International Baccalaureate Diploma participated in their first trip of the 2024-25 IB Cultural Trip Programme, by visiting the world-renowned historic city of Oxford.
The day began with a visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum, where students were introduced to an impressive collection of artefacts from cultures across the globe. The museum’s exhibits provided a unique and tangible way for students to connect with the different knowledge systems that shape our world and deepen their understanding of how these knowledge systems are constructed, preserved, and transmitted through generations. Kees Luteijn, Director of IBDP, explains “The trip focussed partly on the Theory of Knowledge element of the IB Course with a visit to the Pitt Rivers Museum. The students were introduced to the idea of how knowledge can be destroyed and we began questioning the difference between ‘how we know’ versus ‘what we know’. The students also had the opportunity to think about the origin of some of the objects in the museum and how some of those objects might have been acquired.”
Following this, students enjoyed a tour of Christ Church College, one of Oxford’s most famous and prestigious colleges. This offered a glimpse into life at Oxford University, especially as the visit coincided with move-in day for University Freshers. The group also saw other notable colleges such as Wadham, soaking in the rich history and atmosphere of the university.
A key highlight was climbing the 127 steps of the University Church of St. Mary the Virgin, where students were treated to stunning panoramic views of Oxford’s ‘Dreaming Spires’ and could appreciate the true architectural beauty of the city. The walking tour continued with visits to the Radcliffe Camera and the Bodleian Library, both of which provided fascinating insights into the intellectual debate and dialogue, as well as cultural life of the university.
The trip successfully combined academic enrichment with cultural exploration, offering students an invaluable opportunity to experience Oxford’s academic and cultural heritage first-hand, deepening their understanding of knowledge systems while also exposing them to student life and the historical significance of the university. This inaugural trip set a positive tone for future IB Cultural Trip Programme outings.
